Chocolate cake mix cookies are incredibly rich and fudgy with very little effort. This easy recipe comes together with a handful of ingredients, studded with chocolate chips, and baked until soft, gooey, and perfectly decadent.

Holly’s Recipe Highlights
- Flavor: The flavor is rich and deeply chocolatey with a soft, fudgy center and melty chocolate chips in every bite, like a cross between a brownie and a bakery-style cookie.
- Prep Note: The dough is sticky, so lightly greased hands or a cookie scoop make it much easier to work with.
- Budget Tip: This is a simple, low-cost dessert made with just a handful of pantry ingredients.

Ingredient Notes
- Chocolate Cake Mix: Devil’s food cake mix gives the deepest chocolate flavor, but German chocolate or chocolate fudge cake mix also works. Just double-check the box size, since brands can vary slightly and it can affect results.
- Butter: Melted butter is used for a slightly richer flavor. Vegetable oil can be swapped in and keeps the cookies soft and moist.
- Variations: Add mini chocolate chips for extra chocolate flavor and texture. For a sweet-salty finish, sprinkle flaky salt on top.

Holly’s Tips For The Best Cookies
- Use Parchment Paper: Lining the pan with parchment makes for easier release and less cleanup.
- Grease Your Hands: If the dough sticks to your hands, lightly grease your palms or use a cookie scoop.
- Do Not Overbake: Pull them when the tops look set but still soft for the best chewy texture.
- Let the Cookies Rest: Letting them rest on a baking sheet for 2 minutes before moving them prevents tearing.

Store Them The Right Way
Store cooked cookies in an airtight container:
- Room temperature: up to 3 days
- Refrigerator: up to 5 days
- Freezer: up to 2 months
Thaw at room temperature and warm before serving. Unbaked dough balls can also be frozen. Place on a tray to freeze, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from chilled or frozen, adding 1–2 extra minutes as needed.
