- Super quick recipe! Make a homemade turkey, chicken, or vegetable gravy without drippings from scratch that will go from the stovetop to the tabletop in less than 20 minutes!
- Finally have enough gravy! You don’t need a pan of Thanksgiving turkey drippings to make a deliciously thick and rich turkey gravy. Double up the recipe and freeze portions for future meals!
- Homemade goodness! While a can of ready-made or a package of gravy is convenient, they have a high sodium content that may not be suitable for many people.
- No turkey or roast is needed! Make gravy whenever you need to top a meatloaf, stuffing waffles, or pork chops.
Ingredients and Variations
Broth – Turkey, chicken, or vegetable broth gravy can be made using this recipe. Avoid reduced-sodium broths since they won’t have as much flavor as the regular varieties.
Seasonings – Besides thyme and sage, feel free to add any other fresh, dried, or ground savory seasonings.
Variations – Cook it up with some crushed or minced garlic, shallots, or onions. Add some sauteed mushrooms to the finished gravy for a heartier sauce.
How to Make Gravy Without Drippings
Homemade gravy is as easy to make as 1, 2, 3!
- Melt butter over medium heat, add flour and seasonings, and cook until lightly browned.
- Whisk in the broth a little at a time until the gravy is smooth.
- Bring the gravy to a boil for 2 minutes, season with salt and pepper, and serve.
Tips for the Best Gravy!
- Not all of the broth may be needed.
- Don’t let gravy sit out at room temperature for more than two hours to avoid the risk of contamination.
Leftovers
Keep leftover turkey gravy in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat on the stovetop over medium heat before using. Or freeze turkey gravy in ice cube trays and pop out a cube or two to add savory flavor to soups, sauces, and stir-fries.

Texture and consistency is perfect. I just think it needs a little more flavor. I did use Chicken Broth instead , so maybe that’s why. I added onion powder and wow that made a big difference.
So glad you enjoyed it!
