Ingredients and Variations

Cake Mix – Funfetti, strawberry, or chocolate, anything goes! Make a variety of cake pops and freeze for upcoming family and friends activities! Save some bucks and buy store-brand cake mixes.

Frosting – Match the frosting to the cake mix or stock up on basic vanilla for any cake mix flavor.

Melts – Chocolate bark or melting wafers are perfect for this recipe because they’re created for instant melting and quick hardening. Use dark or white bark or melts as desired. Leftover melted chocolate can be saved in the refrigerator and reused.

Decorating Ideas – Colorful sprinkles, colored sugar, nonpareils, crushed cookies or nuts, and flaked coconut are all fun goodies to decorate cookie pops with!

How to Make Cake Pops Easy!

  1. Bake and cool the cake according to the package directions.
  2. Crumble cake and combine with frosting in a large bowl. You may not need all of the frosting.
  3. Form dough into balls – a cookie scoop works best for this.
  4. Melt chocolate (as directed in the recipe below) and dip the sticks into chocolate and then into the center of each cake pop. (This step hardens the chocolate into the center of the cake pop so it’s easier to dip into the outer coating.)
  5. Freeze cake pops for 10 minutes before dipping them into the remaining melted chocolate and decorating.

Pro Tip:

Poke holes in the empty cake box to hold the cake pops upright as they harden.

Tips for the Best Cake Pops

  • Bake and cool the cake a day ahead if you can so the cake is fully chilled and firm.
  • Be sure the cake crumbles are equally sized before mixing with the frosting.
  • Be sure to chill the cake balls before dipping, otherwise, they will fall apart in the melted chocolate.
  • Melt the bark or melts in a deep bowl so you only have to dip once into the coating.
  • Try using a chocolate dipper for quick and easy dipping.

Best Ways to Store Cake Pops

Cake pops can be made in advance and frozen for future fun! Freeze them un-dipped on a baking sheet and then transfer them to a zippered bag and freeze for up to 3 months. It won’t take long to thaw cake pops for dipping and decorating so this is a quick and easy (and tasty!) treat to make any time!

Ingredients

  • 15 ounce box cake mix plus all ingredients listed on the box to make according to package directions
  • 1 cup vanilla frosting more as needed
  • 12 ounces chocolate bark milk or white chocolate
  • sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

  • Preheat oven and prepare a 9×13" pan according to cake mix instructions. Bake the cake as directed and let it cool completely.
  • In a large bowl, crumble the cooled cake into fine crumbs.
  • Add icing to the cake crumbs and mix well. The mixture should stick together when pressed into a ball. If it's still crumbly, gradually add more icing while stirring after each addition.
  • Portion the balls using a medium-sized cookie scoop and roll into 1½" balls.
  • Use a microwave safe bowl to melt 1 ounce chocolate bark. Stir every 30 seconds until completely melted.
  • Dip the tip of each lollipop stick into the melted chocolate and insert halfway into each cake ball.
  • Place cake balls with sticks into the freezer for 10 minutes. Set out sprinkles for decorating.
  • Melt remaining chocolate bark in a small deep microwave-safe dish, and stir at 30 second intervals to prevent burning.
  • Dip cool and firm cake balls into the melted chocolate. Tap each gently on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate. Quickly sprinkle decorations onto the cake pops.
  • Use a styrofoam board or cake pop stand to hold the cake pops upright as the chocolate firms up. Store cake pops in the fridge until ready to serve.

Notes

  • Nutrition calculated without ingredients to make the cake, and without toppings or decorations.
  • Bake and cool the cake a day ahead of time.
  • Crumble the cake so that it is equally sized before mixing with the frosting.
  • Chill cake balls well before dipping into chocolate.
  • Use a deep bowl to melt the chocolate for easier coating.
  • Use a cake pop maker if you like, and if transporting or serving cake pops at a party, you may choose to use these wrappers.
